You are more than just your Step Score! But we can help with that too.
Even though the USMLE Step is important and crucial to success, it is not everything. With a proper game plan, anything is possible. NRMP already has the match data available and it demonstrates that you always have a shot at highly competitive specialties. All it takes is the proper game plan! Dermatology is arguably one of the hardest specialties to match. Many students believe that it is not possible to match this specialty without top quartile USMLE step scores. But NRMP data shows that students with scores that are at or below the national USMLE average (at a score of 230) obtained a 70% match rate in 2018. (Click here and go to page 36 to view the graph for details). This group with lower than average scores had to have an above average game plan to make this competitive match happen. This same graph also shows that some applicants with scores over 260 still did not obtain a match. These applicants likely had subpar game plans and thought that their stellar USMLE score alone was enough to carry them through the match. Don’t fall into the common belief that a high score is all that you need to match into any specialty. You need the complete package to achieve your dreams.
Roadmap to Residency encourages students to do their very best to achieve the highest USMLE step scores that they possibly can achieve. A high USMLE score makes the application process much smoother. A high USMLE score increases your chances of obtaining interviews and matching the program of your choice. You competed Q-banks, study guides and mock exams to ensure you would do well.
